'Twilight: Breaking Dawn' may be broken in two movies

Moviegoers may get an extra chance to visit the world of "Twilight."
With the third installment, "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse," nearly done, Summit Entertainment is prepping to adapt the series' fourth and final book. "Breaking Dawn," though, is weighty enough that the studio is contemplating splitting it into two films, according to Variety.
Thing is, Summit only contracted the lead actors, director Chris Weitz and screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg for four films, and the agreement with series author Stephenie Meyer is also only for four films.
Are we worried? No. The box-office success of "Twilight" and "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" should help all involved see why an extra payday is worth the time.
More worrisome is "Breaking Dawn's" subject matter. Spoilers follow!

'Twilight' takes another big bite out of weekend box office
"The Twilight Saga: New Moon" took the biggest bite out of the weekend box office for the second straight week, according to a ticket tracking company.
The second installment of Summit's teen vampire "Twilight" series sold another $42.5 million in tickets in its second week in release, bringing its two-week total to an estimated $231 million, according to Hollywood.com.
Warner Bros. "The Blind Side," starring Sandra Bullock, sold an estimated $34.1 million in tickets to come in second place, while the apocalyptic "2012," starring John Cusack, came in third with $26.4 million in ticket sales.
Overall, moviegoers spent a record $278 million over the Thanksgiving weekend in the United States and Canada, up $34 million over the same period last year, according to Hollywood.com. Link...

I wasn't there for the story but more as a kind of sociological learning experience. Stuff Christians Like is one of my favorite websites and I genuinely appreciate the humorous look it takes at church culture.

A year ago, Robert Pattinson was virtually unheard of aside from playing a dashing extra in the Harry Potter series of films.
Yet as of today, the 23-year-old who hails from the middle-class streets of Barnes in south west London, is about the most bankable star on the planet.
The Twilight Saga: New Moon, a film sequel in which Pattinson stars as the protagonist vampire, broke the all-time record for opening day takings in America at the weekend.
The movie took an astonishing £44 million at the box office - and some £15 million of that came from midnight screenings across the country as fans queued through the night for the first possible chance to see it. Link...

The Twilight Saga: New Moon notched the third-largest debut on record this weekend, taking in $140.7 million, according to studio estimates from Nielsen EDI.
The latest chapter of the vampire saga, which has made pinup stars of its actors Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner, is behind only The Dark Knight's $158.4 million and Spider-Man 3's $151.1 million.
From its midnight Thursday opening, Moon was headed for the record books. The film did $26.3 million in midnight screenings, shattering the record of $18.5 million held by Knight.
By midnight Friday, Moon had broken the single-day record with $72.7 million, again eclipsing Knight with $67.2 million.
The movie did another $118.1 million overseas.
While the Twilight films have never wowed critics – just 29% of reviewers recommended Moon, according to RottenTomatoes.com – the franchise has been critic-proof, particularly among women, who made up 80% of the audience. Link...

Despite poor reviews, New Moon, the second installment in the Twilight series, has set box office history, breaking all records for midnight runs with an estimated $26.3 million.
The last film to hold the title? Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which made $22.2 million this summer.

An ultrapurist wouldn't let on in this review that Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner), the Quileute Indian tribesman and childhood pal of vampire-smitten high school senior Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), reveals himself as a werewolf in The Twilight Saga: New Moon. (He also reveals himself as one tasty chunk of vealcake.) But I'm trusting that between the millions of Twilighters who have already read all four books in Stephenie Meyer's blockbuster series, and the additional billions who have seen the movie trailer, the beast is already out of the bag. The excellent news for fans is that this sequel to 2008's Twilight is a durable, recognizably faithful movie adaptation of New Moon. That, of course, is the second installment, in which Bella, a dazed, confused, moody, and otherwise identifiable teen-y girl, and Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), a smoldering, inscrutable, broody, and otherwise identifiable teen-throb vampire, swear true and chaste love while trying to keep their hands off each other. Stephenie Meyer's enthusiasm dims for another Twilight book
With sales of more than 70m copies she is the queen of teen vampire romance, but Twilight author Stephenie Meyer has announced that she's "a little burned out on vampires".
Asked on the Oprah Winfrey show if she'd consider writing another book in the Twilight quartet, Meyer said that she had no immediate plans to return to the story of human teenager Bella and her vampire love interest Edward. "I think I need a little break," she said. "I've got to cleanse the palate ... I'm a little burned out on vampires right now."
Her next book, she said, was likely to be a follow-up to her one adult novel The Host – about the invasion of earth by a species which takes over the minds of humans while leaving their bodies intact – which she sees as a trilogy, but it could also be something "completely different". "I have another book that's kind of been itching in the back of my brain, that's completely unrelated, totally fantasy. Author Stephenie Meyer, having penned the second chapter of her teen vampire saga before production on the first film began, cast Bella Swan’s forbidden paramour, Edward Cullen, as essentially a background character in New Moon. 'New Moon' star Kellan Lutz wows fang base

NATICK, Mass. — The screams were loud enough to wake the undead.
Several hundred "Twilight" fans poured into the Natick Collection last night to meet Kellan Lutz, who plays vampire Emmett Cullen in the popular book and film series. The second movie installment, "New Moon," opens Nov. 20.
Seventy-five fans, who paid $75 at Nordstrom's junior department, had their photographs taken with Lutz, who autographed the photos. Another 500 fans who paid $30 for a Hot Topic T-shirt picked up autographed posters from the 24-year-old actor. After the band Hurricane Bells performed in the mall's event area, Lutz made another appearance, this time for a free half-hour question-and-answer session. Oprah brings Stephenie Meyer and “New Moon” to Twilight fans
It may just be another Friday the 13th to you, but for “Twilight” fans today is something much more significant. It’s the day that author Stephenie Meyer will appear on “Oprah.” And it may also be a chance to catch a sneak preview of “New Moon,” [Ed’s note: Originally the book was mistakenly referred to as “Full Moon”] the film of the second book of Meyer’s “Twilight” teen vampire series, set to open in theaters on Nov. 20.
Meyer’s appearance on Oprah is no small event in itself. By her own admission, the author has been “doing the hermit thing” for about a year now. And she says that her chat with Oprah will be the “one and only” interview she’ll do for “Full Moon.”
Meyer told her fans that she chose the Oprah show because she figured that, “[S]ince I’m only doing one interview, better make it big. Really big.” (She also agreed to take specific fan questions about the movie on her website on Monday and Tuesday of this week.) Link....

Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner had a little scare yesterday when they were forced to evacuate their London hotel after a fire alarm went off.

What A Difference A Day Makes: Rob And Kristen Actually Smile For Fans!

Undercover lovers Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart dropped the brooding bit to smile and wave for fans in Paris on the balcony of the Hotel Crillon today along with Taylor Lautner and New Moon director Chris Weitz.
Sure, they're still careful to put Taylor Lautner in between them for the photo call (like that really makes a difference) but it looks like being in Paris has lifted their spirits.
Even Kristen ditched her punk-rock duds for a beautiful strapless gown for the occasion. And thank gawd that horrible femmullet is finally starting to grow out!

'Twilight' among People's Choice Awards nominees

LOS ANGELES — Nominees for the People's Choice Awards are out, and the people choose vampires.
"Twilight" and "True Blood" were among the top nominees announced Tuesday. Fans cast more than 18 million votes online to select the nominee slate and will also choose the winners in 35 categories.
"Twilight" is up for favorite movie, franchise and on-screen team for its trio of stars: Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner. Stewart and Pattinson were also nominated individually for favorite movie actress and actor, and Lautner is up for breakout movie actor.
"True Blood" was nominated for favorite TV obsession and sci-fi/fantasy TV show, plus star Anna Paquin earned a nod for TV drama actress.

Sometimes it’s hard to be a celebrity. November 2009 is one of them. Chances are, stars will, at some point this month, be asked if they’re on Team Edward or Team Jacob. I myself asked The Vampire Diaries’ Ian Somerhalder to enter the debate recently during a Pop Culture Personality Test interview (so totally legit line of questioning!), and having never read the books or seen the first film, he was unable to choose a side. I can appreciate that someone wouldn’t want to judge what he or she has not seen, however fluffy that something is, but if I were a publicist, I’d be telling my clients to have an answer at the ready regardless.
